Delta 8 vs delta 9 is a difference of one chemical bond. Delta-9 THC is the THC in cannabis, the compound every dispensary vape is tested for. Delta-8 has its double bond one carbon along, occurs in the plant only in traces, and is milder by most accounts. In practice they’re also different products: delta-9 vapes here come from state-licensed makers, while delta-8 vapes are hemp-derived and made by converting CBD.
The chemistry, briefly
Michigan’s cannabis regulator explains it in one line: both cannabinoids have a chain of carbon atoms, but delta-8 has the double bond on the eighth carbon and delta-9 has it on the ninth. Healthline calls the structures slightly different. That small shift changes how well the molecule fits the body’s receptors, which is where the difference in strength comes from.

Is delta 8 synthetic or natural?
Both answers are true, which is why the question keeps coming up. Delta-8 does occur naturally in cannabis; a 2022 paper in the Journal of Cannabis Research notes it’s found at substantially lower concentrations than delta-9. There isn’t enough of it to extract at commercial scale, so the delta-8 in products is made in a lab from hemp-derived CBD. The FDA’s consumer notice on the subject is blunt: delta-8 THC products are not approved by the FDA and may put you at risk.
That’s the practical argument for delta-9 from a licensed market. State rules require batch testing, and the results get published. Delta-8 products have no equivalent federal standard.

Price doesn’t separate them the way people expect. A 1 g delta-8 cartridge here costs $16.99 to $19.99, and the median state-market cartridge works out at $19.95 a gram. You aren’t paying less for the milder compound. What you give up is the tested percentage: most of the state-market listings publish one, and none of the delta-8 listings does.
Delta-9 is everything else: 1,389 vapes from brands such as STIIIZY, Jeeter and Lume Cannabis Co., with a median tested THC of 85.6%.
Check the date before you order. These products exist because federal law has defined hemp by its delta-9 THC alone. Congress changed that on November 12, 2025. Hemp will be measured by total THC, which includes THCA and delta-8, and a finished product may hold no more than 0.4 mg of it per container. Most of the change starts on December 11, 2026.
