Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrid: The Three Labels Compared

Short answer3 labels, 1 plant

Indica vs sativa vs hybrid is a choice between three labels for one plant. Indica and sativa are the two traditional types; a hybrid is any cross of the two, which describes most of what is sold today. Of the THC vapes we list with a type on them, 469 say hybrid, 223 sativa and 213 indica.

What each label is supposed to mean

IndicaShort, bushy plants with wide leaves and a shorter flowering time (River Remedy). Sold as the relaxing, evening option.
SativaTall plants with narrow leaves that take longer to finish. Sold as the uplifting, daytime option.
HybridA cross of indica and sativa parents, bred to combine traits (River Remedy). Sold as somewhere in between, depending on the strain.

Dispensary guides agree on the outline. Doobie Nights says sativas tend to feel mentally energizing, indicas offer deeper body relaxation, and hybrids are a mix with effects that vary by strain. Sunmed describes hybrids as thought to be a blend of both. Healthline gives the same rule of thumb and then warns that it isn’t that simple, and RISE adds that the reported effects can vary greatly from one product to the next.

Indica-dominant and sativa-dominant hybrids

Because almost everything is a hybrid, the useful question is which way one leans. My Sesh NYC puts it the way most budtenders do: an indica-dominant hybrid usually leans relaxing, a sativa-dominant one usually leans uplifting and heady. Strain databases attach a ratio, such as 60/40 or 70/30.

Treat those ratios as estimates. They aren’t measured; two databases often disagree about the same strain, and so do brands. On our strain pages we give the lean that sources agree on and say so when they don’t. A few examples from each side:

Hybrid is the biggest group by a distance, and it sits right between the other two on every measure, which is what you’d expect from a label that means a bit of both. The medians span less than two points of THC. Hybrids cost a little more per gram, $22.50 against $19.98 for indica and $20 for sativa.

A fourth group matters as much as the other three: 428 listings carry no type at all. Brands such as MFused and Turn leave it off most products and publish a batch result on nearly all of them. That’s a fair trade.

Sativa vs hybrid, hybrid vs indica: which to pick

If you’re choosing between a sativa and a hybrid, or a hybrid and an indica, the label is the weakest evidence in front of you. In order of usefulness:

  • The strain’s lineage. It tells you what was actually crossed.
  • The extract. Live resin and rosin carry the plant’s own terpenes. Distillate carries added ones.
  • The batch result. A tested THC figure, where the maker publishes one.
  • The type label. A rough style hint, and sometimes not even that: 46% of the strains we stock from several brands carry conflicting labels.

Indica, sativa and hybrid questions

What type of high is hybrid?

It depends on the cross. A hybrid is any mix of indica and sativa lines, so guides describe it as somewhere between the two, leaning one way or the other by strain.

Is a hybrid stronger than indica or sativa?

Not meaningfully. Hybrid vapes we list have a median tested THC of 85.9%, against 84.2% for indica and 85.7% for sativa.

Does hybrid make you sleepy?

The label can’t tell you. Indica-dominant hybrids are described as the relaxing ones, but the word hybrid on its own covers both directions.

What does sativa-dominant hybrid mean?

A cross whose ancestry and reported character lean toward the sativa side, usually written as a ratio such as 60/40. The ratios are estimates, and sources often disagree.

Are most strains hybrids?

Yes. Nearly everything bred in recent decades crosses both lines. 469 of our labeled listings say hybrid, more than indica and sativa combined.
