What “live” means
Live doesn’t describe the extraction. It describes the plant. Both products start with cannabis frozen straight after harvest, which skips drying and curing and keeps more of the terpenes that would otherwise evaporate. Resin made from dried flower is called cured resin; rosin can also be pressed from cured material. So there are really two questions on any label: was the plant fresh-frozen, and was a solvent used.
How each one is made
Live resin. The frozen plant is washed with a hydrocarbon solvent, which strips out cannabinoids and terpenes together. The solvent is then purged from the oil. Dr. Dabber puts it bluntly: live resin is blasted with solvents like butane. In licensed markets the finished oil is tested for residual solvents before it can be sold.
Live rosin. The frozen plant is stirred in ice water so the resin glands break off and can be sieved out as hash. That hash is pressed between heated plates until the oil runs. Sunnyside calls the process more intensive and time-consuming than live resin, and a grower on THCFarmer makes the case for it: because only the trichome heads are collected, rosin captures a more accurate profile of the original plant.

Three things. First, potency is a draw. Live resin and rosin both sit around 78 to 79% THC, about eight points under distillate and liquid diamonds, because both keep more of the plant in the oil. CannaMD’s summary, that resin is often more affordable and potent, holds up only on the first half.
Second, the price gap is large and consistent. Rosin costs more than twice as much per gram. You’re paying for smaller yields and more labor, not for THC.
Third, availability. 33 brands here make live resin vapes, led by Society C, Cresco and STIIIZY. Rosin comes from 19, and Lume Cannabis Co. accounts for a quarter of it, with 1 g live rosin carts and pods at $30, the lowest rosin price per gram with a batch result on the site. PAX and Slerp sell theirs at $45 to $65 a gram.
Which should you buy?
- Buy live resin if you want the plant’s own terpenes at a normal price. It’s the best value step up from distillate.
- Buy live rosin if solventless matters to you, and you accept paying roughly double for it.
- Buy neither for the THC number. If a high percentage is the goal, liquid diamonds and distillate test higher and cost less.
- Run both at low voltage. Battery guides put terpene-rich oils at roughly 2.4 to 2.8 volts, lower than distillate.
