Maui Wowie didn't come from a breeding program. The sources we read describe it as a sativa that grew from Hawaiian landrace genetics on Maui, where it's been cultivated since the 1960s. Leafly calls it a cross of Hawaiian and a second, unknown strain, and lists Maui Waui and Mowie Wowie as other names.
AllBud notes it is still mostly found and grown in the Hawaiian Islands.
