THCA vs delta 8 looks like a contest between an inactive compound and an active one, and in a jar it is: THCA doesn’t intoxicate until it’s heated, and delta-8 does as sold. In a vape the order flips. The coil heats THCA into delta-9 THC, which is more potent than delta-8. So a THCA vape is the stronger product, and the closer of the two to what a dispensary sells.

Why the answer depends on heat
Alamo Behavioral Health states both halves in two sentences: delta-8 is stronger than THCA, simply because THCA is non-psychoactive until heated, and THCA becomes THC, which is more potent than delta-8. Heating removes a carboxyl group from the THCA molecule. Labs account for the weight that’s lost with a factor of 0.877, so 80% THCA oil yields about 70% THC.
Delta-8 needs no conversion, but it starts from a weaker position. ACS Laboratory explains that it binds the CB1 receptor less strongly than delta-9, which is why people describe it as smoother.
Natural vs converted
This is the difference that gets less attention and arguably matters more. THCA is what the plant actually makes, so a THCA vape is extracted, the same way dispensary oil is. Delta-8 barely exists in the plant, so the delta-8 in a vape was manufactured from CBD. The FDA’s notice on delta-8 says these products are not approved by the FDA and may put you at risk, and part of its concern is what the conversion process can leave behind.

Legal status: in transition. A federal law enacted on November 12, 2025 rewrites the hemp definition around total THC, so THCA and delta-8 will count, and sets a ceiling of 0.4 mg of total THC per container for finished products. A later bill, H.R. 6500, moved most of that to December 11, 2026. It left one date alone: from November 12, 2026, cannabinoids the cannabis plant can’t naturally produce are excluded from hemp. Why is THCA getting banned?
It isn’t banned by name. The federal hemp definition changes on December 11, 2026 to count THCA toward total THC. Vape oil that is mostly THCA is far above a 0.3% total THC limit.
Is THCA natural?
Yes. It’s the form of THC the plant produces. Delta-8 in products is made by converting hemp CBD.
