Where each one comes from
Blue Dream is the simple story. Every strain database we checked gives the same two parents, Blueberry and Haze. Leafly calls it a sativa-dominant hybrid and AllBud puts the split at roughly 60/40. The name, and the berry note most descriptions open with, come from the Blueberry side.
Sour Diesel is the argument. The version repeated most often, including on Wikipedia, is Chemdawg 91 × Super Skunk. The grower credited with spreading it, known as AJ, has described it differently: an accidental cross of Chemdawg 91 with a line called DNL, which itself carries Northern Lights, Shiva and Hawaiian. Both accounts put Chemdawg 91 in the middle. It went on to found a family of its own; Super Sour Diesel, Sour Apple and Sour Jack are among the descendants on our shelves.
Flavor: berry vs fuel
This is the real difference, and the reason the two are compared at all. Blue Dream descriptions lead with sweet berry. Sour Diesel earned its name: a pungent, fuel-like smell with a citrus edge, usually shortened to Sour D. If you want either flavor to be the plant’s own, buy live resin or rosin. In distillate the terpenes are added back afterwards.
