Most of what’s grown now is hybrid, so most buds sit somewhere between, and shape tells you nothing reliable about strength or character.

WebMD gives the quickest version: indica is a shorter plant with broader leaves and a woody stalk, and sativa is tall with thin leaves. Bahama Buds adds color, with dark green leaves on indicas and lighter ones on sativas. Weedmaps describes indica buds as tightly packed and more chunky than sativa buds, and puts indica flowering at seven to nine weeks on average. Cresco Labs notes the practical cost on the other side: sativa plants take longer to grow.
Why the differences exist
They’re adaptations. Healthline traces indica to Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Turkey, where the plants adapted to the harsh, dry climate of the Hindu Kush mountains, and sativa to hot, dry climates with long sunny days, in Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia. A compact plant that finishes fast suits the first; a tall one with months to stretch suits the second. Curaleaf Clinic makes the same point from the grower’s side: indicas are usually smaller, faster to flower and suited to cooler climates.
You can still see both ends in strains with documented landrace roots. Durban Poison is a South African sativa landrace and Maui Wowie a Hawaiian one. On the other side, Northern Lights was built on Afghani indica stock and Bubba Kush is an indica-leaning Kush. Compare them:

Why you usually can’t tell from a bud
Three reasons. First, hybrids. Decades of crossing have blended the two shapes, and a modern cultivar can have an indica-looking flower on a plant with sativa ancestry. Second, growing conditions change density and color as much as genetics do. Third, and most important, looks don’t predict chemistry. In a 2016 interview in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, the neurologist Ethan Russo argued that you cannot guess the biochemical content of a cannabis plant from its height, branching or leaf shape.
